Up for bid is a Lionel No. 1540 un-cataloged wind up set from 1935. Complete with its original set box. This set never appeared in the 1935 catalog. A similar set No. 1534 with two No. 1811 cars and a No. 1812 observation car is shown but no No. 1540. I figure the observation was pulled and a No. 1811 was put in. Also the 1508 engine with head light was switched to a No. 1506 engine with whistle. The No. 1540 was offered to dealers as a less expensive pro-mo. An interesting observation is that the catalog shows the Mickey Tender with a black frame. This Tender has a red frame. This set is one of the most sought after of the wind up sets. The train alone is hard to find but having the correct set box and car sleeves makes this even more desirable. The engine is in excellent condition and does work very well when wound with original key. The whistle is loud and clear. The tender is also in excellent condition. Mickey is in great shape with 95% of paint. There is no damage. The litho is bright and strong. The cars come with their original cardboard sleeves. These are much more substantial than the corrugated ones that did not last. The set box is complete with only minor corner wear. There is some repair to the one corner from inside. These are minor considerations. This is probable one of the hardest set boxes of the wind up series to find. The three No. 1811 cars are also excellent, and the colors are bright and strong. The only considerations are some very minor scratches and blemishes as shown in photos. I am sure you wind up collectors would agree that this is the most attractive sets next to the circus set. Another point to make about this set is that all the litho on the cars match (since they were protected by the sleeves and box). This is a problem if you ever tried to put this set together piece meal. Collectors do not miss this opportunity to add this hard to find boxed excellent and complete example to your collection.
