You may not be familiar with the work of Charlie Flatt, but he did a lot of customizing of the Mego line for magazines such as Wizard and ToyFare. He was making all new bodies based on the Mego molds, completely new reworked figures from head to toe. His stuff drew so much attention that he decided to commercialize things, and started Flattworld, releasing his own figures.
His first release, Bela Lugosi as Dracula made it to market. Now, these were not just mass-produced action figures, they were classy collectibles -very well made, good materials and extras. Dracula came with a well-made coffin among others.
That proved to the downfall of the line though. They were so expensive to make and orders were just not enough that the plans for other figures couldn’t go ahead.
The Phantom was to be the next release, and it looks like it made it past the prototype stage.
Seller states:
Here we have a handmade prototype Phantom figure created by Charlee Flatt for FlattWorld. FlattWorld was a much anticipated action figure company that began in 1999 and closed shortly after releasing their first figure, a licensed Bela Legosi as Dracula. FlattWorld had purchased licenses to do Phantom, Astro City, Zorro, and Rocky Horror but unfortunately, they never made it to production. A small number of prototypes exist however for each of those lines. This Phantom Prototype comes with Wolf and Throne. All hand cast and hand painted. The posability of the figure is amazing. This particular figure was given as a gift to the president of the Phantom Fan Club by FlattWorld for his help with the project. Once in a lifetime chance to own a truly amazing figure. Condition is perfect, you will not be disappointed. Fits in perfectly with any Mego Collection. I will include some Mego Museum cards with the purchase. I will be happy to answer any specific questions about condition or provide more pictures. This one is from my personal collection . I’m sorry but I can not end auctions early. Good Luck.
