This is an original antique 1929 Popeye box of glass playing marbles and marble bag made by the Akro Agate Company. I bought this one and a red one like it (listed separately) back in the mid 1970’s and have kept them in an antique secretary since that time. They have never been played with and the condition of the marbles is what I would call wet mint. When I ship this to you, I will put tissue between the marbles so they don’t bump against each other during shipping. Note that the marbles are all the original Popeye corkscrew marbles. The one in the upper left is an “unwound” corkscrew. I showed a separate photo of it. I don’t know if these were made accidentally or on purpose, but I know they are worth more money than the typical kind. The box is bright yellow and in really good condition. There is very little wear overall. On Popeye’s front leg there is a very small puncture in the box lid. There is also a little scratch in the yellow color at about his knees. You can see both of these in the photos shown. Otherwise, it’s in perfect vintage condition. The Akro Agate Company was founded in 1911 in Akron, Ohio to manufacture glass playing marbles. In 1914 it was moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia, where it operated until 1929 when it went out of business during the Great Depression. Own this piece of American memorabilia featuring one of America’s great sailor characters–Popeye! I accept PayPal. Shipping covers continental US only. Other buyers would need to make special arrangements with me. Check out my other auction for the red Popeye box. Please ask any questions before bidding.
