This is an original antique 1929 Popeye box of glass playing marbles made by the Akro Agate Company. I bought this one and a yellow one like it (listed separately) back in the mid 1970’s and have kept them in an antique secretary since that time. They have never been played with and the condition of the marbles is what I would call wet mint. When I ship this to you, I will put tissue between the marbles so they don’t bump against each other during shipping. Note that the marbles are all the original Popeye corkscrew marbles. The box is rich red and in really good condition. There is very little wear overall. There is a worn spot just under the word “shooter,” where it looks like it might have gotten wet at one time. On the inside of the box lid you can see a small stain in the same place. You can see both of these in the photos shown. There is some slight wear on the corners as well–nothing major. Otherwise, it’s in perfect vintage condition. Unfortunately, this set is missing the little marble bag that is supposed to be included. (See my other auction with the yellow box to see what it would have been like.) Possibly you could find a replacement one someday? The Akro Agate Company was founded in 1911 in Akron, Ohio to manufacture glass playing marbles. In 1914 it was moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia, where it operated until 1929 when it went out of business during the Great Depression.
