JOLLY PALS Ferdinand Strauss/STOCK Lehmann GERMANY NMIB PLEASE NOTE! This late 1920s “Jolly Pals” by STOCK of Germany is just one in the series of dog & monkey themed transportation toys that the company produced, of which this one is one of their nicer and larger examples. Whether this toy was commissioned by the Ferdinand Strauss Corporation (USA) or only distributed by them on this side of the Atlantic, is unclear, but this particular example carries the markings of both these major toy makers. The cart is pre-set to follow a wide circle, with the monkey leaning back and forth and pulling on the reins which cause the dog to move up and down. The 8 inch toy shows some degree of wear, most of which may be from storage or from the factory assembly line, as I cannot see any actual play wear on the underside of the wheels. (Also note that the brown spots on the dogs right leg is not rust, but actually part of the lithography). Overall, the toy easily qualifies as near mint, with great original glossy finish, and comes with its extremely rare original box in very similar condition. The plain sides of the box are somewhat dented, but this can easily be steamed and blocked back into shape with a little of patience. (I’ll be perfectly happy to do this for the winning bidder, though this would delay the shipment by a couple of days). This is both a very beautiful and rare toy and the only boxed example I’ve had the luck of owning. Shipping to the USA & Canada by Expedited Mail is $15 to $18, based on your location.
