Up for auction today is a true ‘Holy Grail’ one of a kind set – the American Mask & Novelty Night of the Living Dead masks. Created by the cult late 1980’s mask company out of Michigan, American Mask & Novelty, these are the only licensed masks ever made from George Romero’s legendary film. A project that was years in the making, I collected all four of the masks. The Creepy Karen was flawlessly restored by the legendary Mask Doctor, Kelly Mann. The other three masks remain in their original form complete w/tags. All four have been professionally foam filled by Dante Renta in Los Angeles and mounted on custom stands. All are impeccable display pieces. This is the only known complete set. There was speculation recently that molds had surfaced for these items but that proved to be false. Ray Heikes, the creator and founder of American Mask & Novelty wrote on an internet site recently this in response to the recent claims: “as to the old molds in the building, those would have to be old production molds… believe me, bill and i cleaned everything of value out of the place before we locked the door for the final time…the building has sat empty and neglected since we moved out in early 93… whatever might be there would be old, worn out production molds. As to the NOTLD masks… i dont even have a complete set!” The rare Bill Hinzman mask is called The Graveyard Ghoul. I purchased him from a collector some years ago. It is a mint copy that is in 100% original condition. The very rare Creepy Karen mask was one I purchased from another collector also some years ago. Phenominal restoration by Kelly Mann, it is the best displaying copy of the few specimens that remain. Amazing attention to detail and a restoration that left almost all of the original finishing intact. Hair is also original (as it is on all four masks) The very, very rare Dead John surfaced along with the Creepy Karen but required no restoration at all. It is as 100% mint and original as the Hinzman. Ahhh, the extremely rare Mangled Marylin is the result of a long search. Unrestored and with the original eyes still intact, it is simply a gem and far and away the best of the three extant copies of this mask I know of (it is the only remaining one with its original hair and eyes still intact) Just an amazing piece folks.
