Tangye of Birmingham (UK) was a prolific manufacturer of steam, gas, and oil engines during the 19th and 20th centuries. The company’s products became famous the world over and enjoyed a sound reputation for strength and reliability. Many are still at work in Third-World countries, driving machinery and line-shafting in small factories and workshops. One of their best known products was the twin-cyinder mill engine, which was offered in a range of sizes to suit a variety of industrial applications. Edgar T. Westbury produced a design for a miniature version, which was serialised in Model Engineer magazine, Vulume 110, during the first half of 1954. A.J. Reeves offered castings and drawings, which I believe are still available from the present owners of the company. The specification includes bore of 1.125″ and stroke of 1.5″, for each of the two cylinders. (similar in size to the Stuart No9). The example which is offered for auction features speed control by means of a central geared governor linked to a butterfly valve on the inlet manifold. Realistic inlet and exhaust manifolds are provided, with a globe-valve to shut off the steam supply, and a displacement lubricator complete with oil regulator and blow-down cock. High quality nuts and bolts have been used throughout, and the paint finish is a deep chocolate brown enamel. The engine is attached to a mahogany base which has been finished to a high standard. The engine runs well on compressed air. Length = 17″ (432mm). Width = 12″ (305mm). Height = 8″ (203mm). flywheel diameter = 5.5″ (140mm). Weight = 20lb (9kg). Because of the size and weight, shipping will be expensive. UK £30.00 Europe £70.00. Rest of world £120.00. Shipping Insurance can be arranged, based on final selling price, and this will need to be agreed after the sale. A couple of the photographs appear to suggest that there is some paint discolouration around the cylinder wrappers etc. This is just a photographic defect. The paint finish is of uniform colour on all surfaces.
