PRE-WAR – AS RACED – “WHIRLWIND” DIRT TRACK TETHER CAR 1940 Designed in 1940 by Charles Blakely, manufactured by the Harry Bremer Foundry that was started in 1937, in the city of Santa Anna near Milwaukee, WI ,and distributed for sale thru the H.F. Auler Co.,a Hobby and Toy wholesaling company ,who had a 4 story warehouse on N.Broadway . The Bremer Whirlwind was sold by large national mail order hobby houses like Trost’s of Chicago, Dellaire of Detroit and Polks of NYC, also by department store chains like R.H. Macy’s and Gimbel’s (whose first store was also in Milwaukee). The very first East Coast Bremer ad (artist rendering) appeared in the April 1940 issue of Model Craftsman magazine. Priced at $19.50 (less engine and flywheel) and being sold by the Auler Company. The Bremer ad boasted of a series of firsts; Transverse springs – low center of gravity – aluminum castings – motor guard casting – new style wheels and tires and first with a factory polished body. It was designed with using the Super Cyclone engine for power. Phrases like: Sensational Winner – Engineering Triumph – and Greatest boon to the racing sport helped promote the new racer. It seems many of the same features were already being used by the Speed Chief and Speed King cars at $12.50 and $15.00 respectfully. The new Bremer already had a lot of competition in its price range: the Reginald Denny “Mercury” front drive (Dooling), the Alexander Standard “C.A.R”. the Syncro “Rocket” and the “Speed King” deluxe. The Bremer seemed popular with the local Milwaukee and neighboring Chicago car clubs, as no less than four are shown in a group photo taken on April 21st at a race in Chicago. By the end of 1940 only 8 months after making its debut, the Bremer found itself competing for customers against over 20 manufactured .60 size race cars, being priced between $12.50 and $53.50. It was hard to sell a car if it wasn’t competitive! Through all of 1941, the large Bremer ads in national magazines stopped, replaced with new ads for even more race cars with names like Zipper- Mathews – V- Intercepter – Shrike – Champion – Ariel – and the new Dooling Streamliner (frog). The era of the open wheel style race car was coming to an end, and it was the new cabin and streamliner teardrop cars braking the speed records. Even at the 1941 AMRCA Cable Nationals, only one Bremer was entered, and that did not qualify for time. Dec 7th 1941 changed everything, Model Craftmans Jan 1942 issues editorial started with “We Are At War” – Build Models for Defense. With all the countries metal and rubber resources going towards the war effort almost all manufacturing of tether race cars, engines, tires and wheels eventually ceased, with many companies re-tooling for defense work, included was the Harry Bremer Foundry. In 1957 the Bremer Manuf. Co. was providing castings to the General Motors AC Spark Plug division and are still today, one of the largest suppliers of aluminum sand castings for automotive manuf. and metalworking companies throughout the US.The 1942 Mail order hobby houses still offered what cars and engines they had in stock, many used cars found themselves in classified ads” for sale” Model Craftsman made a hugh effort to keep the hobby alive through publishing AMRCA and local club events and race results. According to Mr Bremer he provided approx 1,500 cars to the H.F. Auler Company for distribution between 1940 and 1942. Old ads and original race car photos show the Bremer grill shell produced with both small and large grill teeth openings. We are not sure when or for what reason this change was made. Being one of the best looking tether race cars ever manufactured, it has been reproduced by numerous individuals over the last 30 years, both US and Foreign, a tribute to it’s timeless design. DESCRIPTION: Being offered this week is a “As Raced” Bremer Whirlwind that has been specially built by a gentleman in the mid-west (a mechanic that worked on full size dirt track race cars of the 30’s) His first hand race car knowledge is evident in the many custom made features that are incorporated in this car. Not living close to a concrete cable track, the car was run on the dirt infield of a local baseball field. The original rear tires were heavily notched to aid in traction, the lower section of the grill (motor guard casting) was widened by 1/2 inch to protect the engine from dirt and stones. A bolt in brass mesh grill insert was added ,also for protection, and was removable for cleaning, a 1/2 belly pan (drip pan) was fastened to a brass frame cross member for protecting and quick servicing of the drive line. From the number of holes in the frame a few different engines had been installed, but you won’t find this engine in your reference books as it is also homebuilt. Sand cast in two pieces with the cylinder being bolted to the crank case, the timer assembly is also sand cast, and the cylinder head is fastened with 6 screws. The venturi has a brass air intake scoop with a flexible needle valve. The bolt on brass exhaust stack extends past the body line and has an aerodynamic shape to it. The cylinder head has a tall combustion chamber above this piston with a steel adapter so both 3/8″ and 1/4″ Champion Spark Plugs could be used. A large copper gas tank bolts to the grill frame support and uses an old brass tire valve stem and cap for a filler tube, the tank is also vented. The drive line consists of a brass flywheel connected to the stock rear end, an oversized knurled grease filler plug replaces the stock screw. The ignition coil is mounted to the wood floor board, protected by the cars cowling, as short hot wire connects to the spark plug. The ignition kill switch is mounted under the floor board, exactly where a shifter would be on a real race car. The ignition trip rod is held in the “on” position by a spring bracket mounted on the dash. Completing the ignition system are 2 original ” Eveready” batteries located in the tail and held in place by the wood seat back. (to absorb vibration the battery pack would be wrapped in an old rubber tire tube and heavily taped) All wiring is original cloth covered. Additional dress up items include: a plastic (yellowed) wind screen, a copper dash board with gauges, and a one piece leather covered removable wood seat. A braided steel wire bridal with copper ends is permanently attached to the frames lugs. Wheels and tires are original to the car with the right rear tire starting to crack and split (and will no longer support the cars weight). All hardware (nuts and bolts) seem original, except the builder chose to add 2 oversized rear axle acorn nuts. We see no welds or repairs, as these frames are know to break near the front radius rod supports. Some parts have light surface rust on them “Factory Stampings” on this particular car include the initials “V” on the frame and a “D” on the cowl. A unique addition to any collection.
